Hungarian Károli Protestant Bible

The Vizsoly Bible, also called Károli Bible was the first Bible printed in the Hungarian language. It was translated in the 16th century by pastor Gáspár Károli and fellow Calvinists and was printed in 1590 by Bálint Mantskovit. A copy is kept on permanent display in the Hungarian village of Vizsoly. 

The Károlyi Bible (in Protestant practice: the Károli Bible) or Vizsoli Bible is the oldest extant (and still in use) complete Bible translated into Hungarian. The translation was done by Gáspár Károlyi and his fellow pastors, and the printer Bálint Mantskovits assisted in the printing of the book. In January 2015, the Vizsoli Bible was included among the Hungarian books. 

The complete Hungarian translation and printing of the Bible was already planned by Péter Bornemisza when Mantskovits was still working for you, as evidenced by the postscript of his letter dated February 18, 1580.[2] The Holy Scriptures were translated by Gáspár Károlyi, a reformed deacon and pastor in Gönc, and he started the work in 1586. Three years later, the complete translation was completed. Károlyi could not translate the entire Bible by himself in three years; an examination of the language of the translation suggests that he had at least three assistants. The New Testament appears to be linguistically uniform, which makes it likely that it was translated entirely by Károlyi. The printing was started on February 18, 1589 under the leadership of Bálint Mantskovits[3] of Polish origin, who brought the letters for the great task from the Low Countries, and the paper was obtained from Poland. Mantskovits moved his printing house from Galgóc to Vizsoly.[4] The complete translation was not yet ready for printing, so the students of the time, including Albert Szenczi Molnár, carried Károlyi's manuscripts page by page on foot from Gönc to Vizsoly.

A Károlyi-Biblia (protestáns gyakorlatban: Károli-Biblia) avagy vizsolyi Biblia a legrégibb fennmaradt (és ma is használt) teljes, magyar nyelvre lefordított Biblia. A fordítást Károlyi Gáspár és lelkésztársai végezték, a könyv kinyomtatásában pedig Mantskovits Bálint nyomdász segédkezett. 2015 januárjában a vizsolyi Biblia bekerült a hungarikumok közé.

A Biblia teljes magyar fordítását és kinyomtatását Bornemisza Péter már korábban tervbe vette, amikor Mantskovits még nála dolgozott, erről 1580. február 18-án kelt levelének utóirata tanúskodik.^[2] A Szentírást Károlyi Gáspár református esperes, gönci lelkész fordította le, a munkálatoknak 1586-ban kezdett neki. Három év múlva el is készült a teljes fordítás. Károlyi három év alatt egyedül nem fordíthatta le az egész Bibliát; a fordítás nyelvének vizsgálata arra vall, hogy legalább három segítőtársa volt. Az Újtestamentum nyelvileg egységesnek látszik, ebből valószínűsíthető, hogy ezt a részt teljes egészében Károlyi fordította. A nyomtatást 1589. február 18-án kezdték meg a lengyel származású^[3] Mantskovits Bálint vezetésével, aki a nagy feladathoz Németalföldről hozatta a betűket, a papírt pedig Lengyelországból szerezték be. Mantskovits a nyomdáját Galgócról helyezte át Vizsolyba.^[4] A nyomtatás elkezdésekor még nem készült el a teljes fordítás, ezért Károlyi kéziratait az akkori diákok – köztük Szenczi Molnár Albert – laponként, gyalogszerrel hordták Göncről Vizsolyba.
