Somali has been the national language of Somalia since 1972, gaining official status with standardization (Standard Somali) and the adoption of the Latin alphabet, developed under orders of then president  Siad Barre. Somali is spoken by between 8,374,000 and 8,634,000 people: between 5,400,000 and 6,700,000 in Somalia, 2,050,000 in Ethiopia, 312,000 in Kenya, 290,000 in Yemen, 282,000 elsewhere.
