English Summary:
Around the year 1500, the Italian priest Don Filippo Neri helps street kids and orphans in his poor little chapel. He is no clergyman by the book, but a true believer in terms good and bad and he teaches this to his children. Neri is not very well-seen by the church and his only "friend" is the dry, humorless Ignatius De Loyola. But Neri’s real counterpart is the devil himself, working in endless incarnations in Neri’s direct neighborhood, trying to seduce his kids. His newest kid is the young thief Cirifischio, making a lot of problems. When Cirifischio has an argument with a young boy of a local aristocrat, the boy turns out to be a girl, the young Leonetta, some kind of a sex slave for her owner. Neri adopts her too, and the young people fall in love. 15 Years later, the devil is back and leads Cirifiscio onto a murder. Now lawless, the thief must flee Neri and leave Leonetta back. Neri does the best he can to save the thief's life, but does he have a chance against the fate? Moreover, Neri has to fight the death sin of vanity itself...from an unexpected side…

Roma, seconda metà del cinquecento. In una ricca chiesa della capitale, un piccolo ladruncolo, Cirifischio, ruba la preziosa pisside d'oro ma viene scoperto dal parroco e inseguito dalle guardie. Entra all'interno della bottega del fabbro mastro Iacomo, il quale gli indica una chiesa nelle vicinanze, in cui il piccolo può rifugiarsi chiedendo asilo.
Lì Cirifischio incontra un giovane prete fiorentino, don Filippo Neri che, in quella chiesa dà vitto e alloggio ai pellegrini giunti a Roma. Quando le guardie entrano in chiesa per arrestare il ladruncolo, don Filippo arriva con la pisside in mano e fa credere che lui stesso aveva mandato il bambino a chiedere in prestito l'oggetto, salvandolo dalla morte.

A forgatókönyvet Luigi Magni és Bernardino Zapponi írta, a filmet Luigi Magni rendezte, a zenéjét Angelo Branduardi szerezte, a producere Nando Basile volt. A Excelsior Cinematografica és a RAI Radiotelevisione Italiana készítette, a Medusa Distribuzione forgalmazta. Olaszországban 1983. április 1-jén, vágott változattal 1984. december 18-án mutatták be a mozikban, Magyarországon 1989. november 9-én az MTV 1-es csatornán vetítették le a televízióban.
