The Beat That My Heart Skipped (French: De battre mon cœur s'est arrêté) is a 2005 French film drama directed by Jacques Audiard and starring Romain Duris. It tells the story of Tom, a shady realtor torn between a criminal life and his desire to become a concert pianist.

Intense young "tough" Thomas Seyr is a 28-year-old real estate broker involved in shady business deals. His business partners, Fabrice and Sami, spend much of their time ruthlessly chasing squatters and illegal immigrants out of the buildings they have procured and trying to work their way around government housing regulations. Thomas is born to this kind of work; his father, Robert, is also involved in dodgy enterprises and sometimes calls upon Thomas to beat up people who refuse to pay. Tom shows a protective and defensive attitude toward his father who doesn't always appreciate what his son does for him – so much so that when his father introduces his new girlfriend to Tom, Tom undermines her to her face, and insults her to his father, insisting she is an opportunistic "whore." Later, when he tries to enlist her help to watch over his father, she tells him they broke up due to Robert changing his attitude and she is aware of Tom's backstabbing because Robert told her. Robert by this time is in danger from a Russian gangster, Minskov (Anton Yakovlev) who scammed him out of 300,000 Euros and Tom is worried for his safety.

Tom, jeune homme de 28 ans, est, comme son père, un marchand de biens véreux à Paris. Il voulait autrefois devenir pianiste, comme sa mère, mais a abandonné ce projet quand cette dernière est morte. Soumis au chantage affectif et à l'immoralité de son père vieillissant, il vit dans un univers violent, ne fait preuve d'aucune pitié envers les immigrés qu'il expulse des immeubles qu'il récupère, et a des rapports brutaux avec tous ses proches. Dans cet univers là, il écoute également de la musique électronique en portant un casque qui l'isole de tout.

Un jour, il rencontre celui qui fut autrefois l'imprésario de sa mère. Ce dernier lui propose de passer une audition. Tom voit alors renaître son espoir de devenir pianiste et décide de s'entraîner sérieusement pour l'audition, choisissant pour l'aider une étudiante chinoise virtuose qui ne parle pas le français. En attendant la date fatidique, il doit continuer son travail qui lui est de plus en plus insupportable et venir en aide à son père, escroqué par un mafieux russe. Ses doigts ne cessent de jouer, il répète inlassablement mais perturbé par ses associés, il rate l'audition. Son père est assassiné. Deux ans plus tard, une salle de concert attend pour un récital celle qui est devenue sa compagne, l'ancienne étudiante chinoise. Mais dans la rue, Tom reconnaît l'assassin de son père, il se bat contre lui, s'empare de son arme mais ne parvient pas à tirer. Meurtri, blessé, Tom rejoint la salle de concert, ses doigts ensanglantés pianotent, son visage s'illumine. C'est l'histoire d'un retour à la vie, de la rédemption d'un homme confronté à la folie du monde extérieur et à sa propre brutalité.

Tom 28 éves és úgy látszik, élete rendeltetéseként követi apja nyomdokait az ingatlanpiac laza, már-már brutális világába, mígnem egy véletlen találkozás felcsillantja előtte a reményt: belőle is lehet zongoraművész, mint édesanyja volt egykoron. A lehető legnagyobb komolysággal kezd készülni meghallgatására egy kínai zongora virtuóz segítségével, aki egy szót sem beszél franciául, így egyetlen eszközük a kommunikációra a zene. A fiú mindennapi munkájának mocskos világából érkező nyomás azonban hamarosan elviselhetetlen mértékű lesz számára!
