Overview:
The word Bible is the plural form of the ancient Greek byblion, meaning "books". (And the word byblion, meaning "book scroll", comes from the word byblosz, which originally denoted Egyptian papyrus, the material used for writing in ancient times.) In the Hebrew Bible, only the prophet Daniel calls the collection of sacred documents "books". Christians in AD From the 2nd century onwards, they began to apply this name to their collection of documents claimed to be from God. This simple name aptly expresses that the extraordinary nature of this work is not in its external form, since it contains only books, writings apparently similar to other human works. The Bible is often called simply "Writing", "Scriptures" (Jesus and the apostles also use this name), and it is also called "Word of God", "Scripture", "Book of Books". The name "Word of God" comes from the Bible: it is used to distinguish God's revelation through prophets. In addition, it is mentioned in Isaiah as the "Book of the Lord". According to this, the Bible is God's book for people.
A biblia szó az ógörög byblion többes száma, jelentése „könyvek”. (A „könyvtekercs” jelentésű byblion szó pedig a byblosz szóból származik, amely eredetileg az egyiptomi papiruszt, az ókorban íráshoz használt anyagot jelölte.) A Héber Bibliában egyedül Dániel próféta nevezi „könyvek”-nek a szent iratok gyűjteményét. Az „Isten Igéje” elnevezés a Bibliából származik: Isten prófétákon keresztül közölt kinyilatkoztatásának megkülönböztető jelölésére szolgál. Ezen kívül Ézsaiásnál az „Úr könyve” néven szerepel. Eszerint tehát a Biblia Isten könyve az emberek számára.
