S kétségtelen, legtöbbször A Csárdáskirálynő dallamai hangzanak fel, mellyel a zeneszerző kiérdemelte az első helyet kora vezetô operett-komponistái között! Nem véletlenül játszották az 1915-ös premier helyszínén, Bécsben 533 estén át, majd söpört végig a mű Európán: az I. világháború ellenére azonnal bemutatták Svédországban, Finnországban, Lengyelországban, Oroszországban, Olaszországban, majd Budapesten 1916 novemberében, s végül eljutott egy esztendővel később a New York-i Broadway-re is. Kálmán muzsikájáról itt az angol szövegkönyvet készítő P. G. Wodehouse nyilatkozta: "A Csárdáskirálynő nemcsak e tehetséges magyar ember művei közül emelkedik ki, hanem egyenesen minden idők legjobb zenéje!" A történet egy reménytelennek látszó szerelemről szól. Edvin herceg rajong Szilviáért, a pesti orfeumcsillagért, de arisztokrata családja ellenzi ezt a rangon aluli kapcsolatot. A szülők mindent elkövetnek, hogy fiukat visszacsalják Bécsbe, hogy ott a neki megfelelő leányzót, Stázi komteszt válassza élettársául - ezért Vereczky Szilviának, a sanzonettnek New York-i szerződést intéznek. Ám a szerelmesek érdekében szövetkezik a kedves, bolondos Bóni gróf, az orfeum főpincére, Miska és ikertestvére, Alfonz, a Lippert-Weilersheim-ház főkomornikja, valamint Feri bácsi, Bóni orfeumi barátja. Főképpen ő mozgatja a szálakat: a pár jövőjének érdekében még egykori szerelmét, Edvin édesanyját is hajlandó leleplezni... A Budapesti Operettszínház előadása - hasonlóan az ősbemutatót követő sikerszériához - a magyar főváros után végigjárta az egész világot. Állva tapsolt a produkciónak Tokió, Róma, München, Amszterdam közönsége, Salzburgban, Bukarestben és Prágában pedig koprodukcióban, ugyancsak KERO rendezésében hódított.

They say no minute goes by in the world without a melody of Emmerich Kalmdn’s, being heard either on stage, on television, on the radio, at a concert or gala. And most often, no doubt, it is the melodies of The Gipsy Princess one hears, the one with which the composer won the first place among leading composers of the era. The production of the Budapest Operetta and Musical Theatre toured all around the world after the Hungarian capital. Audiences of Tokyo, Rome, Munich and Amsterdam gave standing ovations, while Bucharest, Salzburg and Prague saw coproductions also directed by KERO® with local stars. The Gipsy Princess finally returned home afier its long journey to charm audiences again with this DVD version as well!
Emmerich Kálmán (24 October 1882 – 30 October 1953) was a Hungarian composer of operettas.
Kálmán was born Imre Koppstein in Siófok, then in Austria-Hungary, on the southern shore of Lake Balaton, to a Jewish family. Kálmán initially intended to become a concert pianist, but because of early-onset arthritis, he focused on composition instead. He studied music theory and composition at the National Hungarian Royal Academy of Music (then the Budapest Academy of Music), where he was a fellow student of Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály under Hans Kössler.
His early symphonic poems Saturnalia and Endre es Johanna were well-received, although he failed to achieve publication. He also composed piano music and wrote many songs: a song cycle on poems by Ludwig Jacobowski and a song collection published under the title Dalai.
However, the popularity of his humorous cabaret songs led him towards the composition of operettas. His first great success was Tatárjárás – Ein Herbstmanöver in German, meaning Autumn maneuver, although the English title is The Gay Hussars, which was first staged at the Lustspieltheater in Budapest, on 22 February 1908. Thereafter he moved to Vienna, where he achieved worldwide fame through his operettas Der Zigeunerprimas, Die Csárdásfürstin, Gräfin Mariza, and Die Zirkusprinzessin.
Die Csárdásfürstin (The Csárdás Princess; translated into English as The Riviera Girl and The Gipsy Princess) is an operetta in 3 acts by Hungarian composer Emmerich Kálmán, libretto by Leo Stein and Bela Jenbach. It premiered in Vienna at the Johann Strauß-Theater on 17 November 1915. Numerous film versions and recordings have been made. The operetta is widely beloved across Europe, particularly in Hungary, Austria, Germany and the former Soviet Union, where it was adapted into a popular film. It is arguably Kálmán's most successful work.
