Márai Sándor
Marai authored 46 books. His 1942 book Embers (Hungarian A gyertyák csonkig égnek, meaning "The Candles Burn Down to the Stump") expresses a nostalgia for the bygone multi-ethnic, multicultural society of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, reminiscent of the works of Joseph Roth. In 2006 an adaptation of this novel for the stage, written by Christopher Hampton, was performed in London. He continued to write in his native language, but was not published in English until the mid-1990s. Like other memoirs by Hungarian writers and statesmen, it was first published in the West, because it could not be published in the Hungary of the post-1956 Kádár era. The English version of the memoir was published posthumously in 1996. After his wife died in 1986, Márai retreated more and more into isolation.

Kutyatörténet következik… Talán kötelességmulasztás kutyáról írni… Annyi sürgős, halaszthatatlan mondanivaló lenne az emberrel kapcsolatban… A világban komor próféták járnak, akik másféle kötelességre intik mostanában az írót, mint kutyaregényre. Erre gondol, de rögtön szégyenkezik is, mert a próféták szavát különben sem érzi kötelező parancsnak s egyszeriben szolidaritást vállal a prófétákkal szemben a kutyával… Nem, csak a kutya s az ember idilljéről adni hírt, ez csakugyan kevéssé izgalmas feladat… De talán, ha nagyon odafigyel a kutyára, megtud az emberről is valamit.

Marai 46 könyvet írt. 1942-ben megjelent Embers (magyarul A gyertyák csonkig égnek) című könyve Joseph Roth műveire emlékeztető nosztalgiát fejez ki az Osztrák-Magyar Birodalom letűnt soknemzetiségű, multikulturális társadalma iránt. 2006-ban Londonban bemutatták ennek a regénynek a színpadi adaptációját, amelyet Christopher Hampton írt. Továbbra is anyanyelvén írt, de angolul csak az 1990-es évek közepén jelent meg. Más magyar írók és államférfiak visszaemlékezéseihez hasonlóan ez is Nyugaton jelent meg először, mert az 1956 utáni Kádár-korszak Magyarországon nem jelenhetett meg. Az emlékirat angol változata posztumusz, 1996-ban jelent meg. Felesége 1986-os halála után Márai egyre inkább az elszigeteltségbe vonult vissza.
