The story follows László Listius, a sinister figure—alchemist, poisoner, and merciless murderer—who is said to be possessed by the devil. Listius terrorizes the Palatine, the imperial governor, and even comes into contact with the emperor through alchemy, while evading the law by sadistic means. Károly Szalay (b. 1929) is a historian, literature teacher, and prolific novelist. He has written acclaimed monographs on Chaplin and Tati and many novels depicting Hungarian reality.
