The 2021 Bayreuth Festival opened with this groundbreaking new staging of Richard Wagner’s Der fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman), directed by Dmitri Tcherniakov. Reimagined as a dark tale of violent revenge, the production brings together a stellar cast led by Asmik Grigorian as Senta, whose dramatic and vocal intensity earned ovations worldwide. John Lundgren is the dark, tormented Dutchman, while Georg Zeppenfeld (Daland) and Eric Cutler (Erik) deliver commanding performances.

This release also marks a milestone in Bayreuth history: Oksana Lyniv became the first female conductor of the festival, praised for her detailed and dynamic leadership of the Bayreuth Festival Chorus and Orchestra.
