English Summary:

This volume is a particular one because the lyric works of Madách have been rather rarely published and as far as I know the English translation of the poems does not exist. I did not take account the sometimes outmoded language of the idiom of 19th century that is unusual to the recent custom and I tried to use the present-day English in the English text. I do hope that who will read the poems simultaneously in Hungarian and in English will have pleasant entertainment. – Otto Tomschey

Imre Madách de Sztregova et Kelecsény (20 January 1823 – 5 October 1864) was a Hungarian aristocrat, writer, poet, lawyer and politician. His major work is The Tragedy of Man (Az ember tragédiája, 1861). It is a dramatic poem approximately 4000 lines long, which elaborates on ideas comparable to Goethe's Faust. The author was encouraged and advised by János Arany, one of the most famous of the 19th-century Hungarian poets.
