Overview

The Pajama Game is a delightful 1957 musical film based on the 1954 stage musical of the same name, which itself was adapted from Richard Pike Bissell's 1953 novel 7½ Cents. Produced and directed by George Abbott and Stanley Donen, the film is a vibrant celebration of workplace romance and labor rights.

The story centers around Sid Sorokin (John Raitt), the newly hired superintendent of the Sleeptite Pajama Factory in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Upon arriving, he quickly falls for Babe Williams (Doris Day), a dedicated worker and a key member of the factory's employee union leadership. Their relationship blossoms at the company picnic, but Babe is concerned that their conflicting roles in management and labor might ultimately drive them apart.

The central conflict revolves around the union's demand for a modest raise of seven-and-a-half cents per hour to align with industry standards. The factory's management, however, is reluctant to comply. In response, the workers implement a slow-down strategy, deliberately compromising the quality of the pajamas. When Babe takes more drastic action by sabotaging machinery, Sid is forced to fire her, creating tension in their budding romance.

Sid becomes increasingly suspicious of the manager's financial practices. He strategically dates Gladys (Carol Haney), the boss's assistant, and manages to obtain the key to a locked account book during an evening at "Hernando's Hideaway". Upon investigating, he discovers that the manager has been falsely reporting the raise as implemented months ago while pocketing the difference. Sid threatens to expose this fraud to the board of directors unless the raise is paid immediately.

The film brilliantly combines romantic comedy, musical numbers, and social commentary, making The Pajama Game a memorable entry in the golden age of Hollywood musicals.
