Overview
The Pajama Game is a delightful 1957 musical film adapted from the 1954 stage musical of the same name, which was based on the 1953 novel 7½ Cents by Richard Pike Bissell. Directed by George Abbott and Stanley Donen, this vibrant film features the enchanting Doris Day as Babe, alongside John Raitt as Sid, the new superintendent of the Sleeptite Pajama Factory in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The storyline follows Sid as he quickly becomes smitten with Babe, a dedicated factory worker and member of the employee union's leadership. Their romance blossoms during a company picnic, but Babe is apprehensive about their differing roles in management and labor, fearing it may jeopardize their relationship. Her concerns are validated when the union demands a wage increase of seven-and-one-half cents per hour to meet industry standards, but the factory manager is evasive in addressing their request.
In a bid to retaliate against the manager's refusal, the workers orchestrate a slow-down and intentionally sabotage the pajamas. When Babe crosses the line and damages some machinery, Sid is forced to fire her, complicating their budding romance.
As Sid investigates the manager's suspicious behavior, he takes Gladys (played by Carol Haney), the boss's assistant, on a date to "Hernando's Hideaway," hoping to uncover secrets hidden in the locked account book. After getting Gladys drunk, she provides him with the key, leading Sid to discover that the manager has falsely reported the wage increase as having been implemented months earlier, pocketing the difference for himself. Sid confronts the manager and threatens to expose him to the board of directors unless the raise is paid immediately.
With its catchy musical numbers, charming performances, and comedic elements, The Pajama Game is a timeless classic that captures the spirit of love and labor in a light-hearted yet impactful manner.
