Interesting Facts
Jacques Ibert’s film scores represent a significant portion of his output, often displaying a stylistic freedom and color that defines his work. The music for Macbeth was composed for Orson Welles' 1948 film adaptation; however, due to complex production issues, much of Ibert’s original music was either uncredited or re-recorded with new parts added. This suite is based on Ibert's own arrangement of his original score, preserving his vision of the tragedy.
The score for Golgotha (1935), a film about the Passion of Christ directed by Julien Duvivier, is notable for its respectful and moving depiction of key biblical events. It features the Ondes Martenot, an early electronic instrument, whose ethereal sound lends a unique, spiritual quality to the score, particularly during the scenes of the Crucifixion and Agony. The songs from Don Quichotte (1933) were originally written for the famous Russian bass Fyodor Chaliapin, showcasing Ibert's flair for dramatic vocal writing and delightful orchestral wit.
