Overview

The Actors is a contemporary comedy film released in 2003, written and directed by Conor McPherson. Featuring a stellar cast that includes Michael CaineDylan MoranLena Headey, and Michael Gambon, the film is set against the vibrant backdrop of Dublin.

The narrative follows the misadventures of two mediocre stage actors who concoct a scheme to swindle a retired gangster out of £50,000. This gangster owes the money to a third party whom he has never met, and the actors see an opportunity to impersonate this unidentified individual to claim the debt as their own. To execute their plan, they enlist the help of Moran's exceptionally clever nine-year-old niece, who adeptly restructures their scheme each time unforeseen complications arise.

The film cleverly intertwines this con with the actors' involvement in a unique production of Shakespeare's Richard III, in which the cast dresses in Nazi uniforms—an allusion to Ian McKellen's celebrated production. The story primarily centers around the iconic Olympia Theatre, known for its famous glass awning over the entrance, which has unfortunately been destroyed in a traffic accident but has since been restored to its former glory.
