Overview
Launching his Grammy-winning “Under Stalin’s Shadow” cycle, conductor Andris Nelsons leads the Boston Symphony Orchestra in a landmark live recording from Symphony Hall, April 2015. This opening volume centers on Shostakovich’s monumental Symphony No. 10 in E minor, Op. 93, composed shortly after Stalin’s death. Often interpreted as Shostakovich’s searing commentary on the dictator’s reign, the symphony balances tragedy, violence, irony, and personal triumph.
As a prelude, the recording includes the Passacaglia from Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, one of Shostakovich’s most dramatic and tragic operatic interludes. Nelsons, a conductor steeped in both Russian and Western traditions, brings intensity, clarity, and emotional depth to this powerful program.
