EN: Gyula Illyés (1902–1983) was a poet, novelist, and one of the most influential voices of Hungarian social realism. Puszták népe was inspired by André Gide’s Voyage au Congo (1927), which encouraged writers to explore their own societies with the same honesty as travelers did foreign lands. Illyés turned this avant-garde challenge inward, shining a light—what Babits Mihály called a “searchlight into the secrets of the sea floor”—on the hidden suffering of Hungary’s rural poor. The book became a moral and cultural touchstone, shaping generations of readers and inspiring countless later works of social awareness.
