Overview
The Bookends is the record Eric Gales made after getting sober. That context matters. The album was released in 2019 on Provogue Records and it sounds like someone who has genuinely got something to say — and the guitar chops to say it loud.
Gales plays everything: guitars, slide, xylophone, bass and drums on select tracks. The guest list is serious. Beth Hart sings on a cover of "With a Little Help From My Friends." Doyle Bramhall II takes verses and a middle solo on "Southpaw Serenade." B. Slade handles vocals on "Something's Gotta Give" and the bonus remix of "Pedal to the Metal."
Eleven tracks, produced by Matt Wallace, recorded across three Los Angeles studios. The Memphis-born guitarist — who has been called one of the most gifted players of his generation since his teens — delivers here with the confidence of someone who has earned every note.
This copy carries Eric Gales's signature on the front cover and multiple additional signatures on the inside booklet lyric page.
Interesting Facts
- Eric Gales was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1974 and released his debut album at age 16. He plays guitar left-handed but with the strings strung right-handed — an upside-down technique that draws frequent comparisons to Jimi Hendrix.
- The Bookends followed Gales's public battle with addiction and marks a widely noted creative renewal. The album title references both bookends as structural objects and the idea of closing one chapter and opening another.
- Doyle Bramhall II, who features on "Southpaw Serenade," is himself a left-handed upside-down guitarist — making his presence on this particular track something of a deliberate statement.
- Beth Hart, featured on "With a Little Help From My Friends," is one of the most acclaimed blues and soul vocalists currently active in Europe and North America, known for her powerful live performances and multiple Provogue Records releases.
- MonoNeon, who plays bass on the album, is the flamboyantly creative bassist known for his work with Prince and his highly individual solo output.
- Producer Matt Wallace has worked with artists including Faith No More, Maroon 5, and Train — a mainstream production pedigree that gives The Bookends a polished but grounded sound.
- Maor Appelbaum, who mastered the album, is a Los Angeles-based mastering engineer with an extensive catalogue across rock, metal, and blues.
- The album was recorded in three separate Los Angeles studios over what the liner notes suggest was a focused, energised session period.

A vendéglista komoly. Beth Hart énekel a "With a Little Help From My Friends" feldolgozásán. Doyle Bramhall II versszakokat és egy középső szólót hoz a "Southpaw Serenade"-ben. B. Slade kezeli a vokált a "Something's Gotta Give"-ban és a "Pedal to the Metal" bónusz remixén.
Tizenegy szám, Matt Wallace produceri munkájával, három Los Angeles-i stúdióban felvéve. A memphisi születésű gitáros — akit tinédzserkora óta generációja egyik legtehetségesebb játékosaként emlegetnek — itt olyan magabiztossággal nyújtja teljesítményét, amely minden hangjegyért megszolgált.
- Doyle Bramhall II, aki a "Southpaw Serenade"-ben szerepel, szintén bal kezes fejjel lefelé gitáros — jelenléte ezen a számon tudatos gesztus.
- Beth Hart, a "With a Little Help From My Friends" vendégelőadója, napjaink egyik legelismertebb blues- és soul-énekesnője Európában és Észak-Amerikában.
- MonoNeon, aki a lemezen basszusgitározik, a Prince-szel való együttműködéséről és egyéni szólóteljesítményeiről ismert kreatív zenész.
