Years later, Bob has taken on a new identity as Bob Jones and now runs a public relations firm in Los Angeles. He is happily married to Gail (Nicole Kidman), who is pregnant with their first child.

Bob's world is turned upside down when he receives a devastating diagnosis of terminal kidney cancer, leaving him with the grim realization that he may not live to see the birth of his child. In an effort to leave a legacy for his son, Bob begins to create home movies that capture his essence, teaching his child everything from cooking spaghetti to driving.

Guided by a Chinese healer named Mr. Ho (Haing S. Ngor), Bob learns the importance of forgiveness and listening to his heart. At Gail's encouragement, they return to Detroit for a traditional Ukrainian wedding for his brother Paul (Bradley Whitford). During this visit, Bob confronts his estranged relationship with his family, leading to emotional revelations and attempts to reconcile his past.
