Overview
"Mercury Rising" (Hungarian title: "A kód neve: Merkúr") is a high-stakes action thriller starring Bruce Willis as Art Jeffries, a renegade FBI agent who finds himself protecting Simon, a nine-year-old autistic boy who has unwittingly cracked the government's new "unbreakable" code known as MERCURY. The boy can read the highly sophisticated encryption as easily as other children read fairy tales, making the billion-dollar secret code vulnerable—especially if America's enemies discover Simon's ability and kidnap him. When Nicholas Kudrow (Alec Baldwin), the official responsible for the code program, orders the elimination of this "security risk," he doesn't count on Jeffries getting involved. Fleeing from deadly assassins, Jeffries quickly realizes he can trust no one. As time runs out, he discovers that his only chance for survival is to use Simon's extraordinary abilities to bring his adversaries to justice.

Interesting Facts
Scientific Accuracy:
The MERCURY code featured in the film is based on actual encryption concepts. The filmmakers consulted with cryptography experts to create a believable scenario where an autistic savant might be able to see patterns that sophisticated computers and code breakers couldn't recognize. While creative liberties were taken, the core concept of pattern recognition in cryptography remains scientifically sound.
Authentic Portrayal of Autism:
To prepare for the film, the young actor playing Simon (Miko Hughes) and the production team worked closely with autism specialists to ensure an accurate and sensitive portrayal of the condition. The film was praised by some autism advocacy groups for helping raise awareness about autism spectrum disorders at a time when public understanding was much more limited than it is today.
Action Star Evolution:
"Mercury Rising" represents an interesting phase in Bruce Willis's career when he was expanding beyond the purely action-oriented roles that made him famous in films like "Die Hard." In this film, Willis balances intense action sequences with more emotional scenes as his character forms a protective bond with Simon, showcasing his range as an actor during this transitional period in his filmography.
Director's Background:
Harold Becker, who directed "Mercury Rising," has a history of creating tense thrillers that explore institutional corruption and flawed heroes, including "Sea of Love" with Al Pacino and "City Hall" with John Travolta. His background in documentary filmmaking (before transitioning to feature films) is evident in his attention to procedural details in many scenes, particularly those involving FBI protocols and operations.
