Overview

Composed in December 1917, Zoltán Kodály’s Hungarian Rondo (Magyar rondó) grew out of material originally written as incidental music for Zsigmond Móricz’s stage play Pacsirtaszó (Skylarking). The composition weaves together four Hungarian folk songs and an instrumental dance melody, all framed in a lively rondo form that celebrates Hungarian musical idioms within a classical structure.

Kodály prepared the work in two versions — one for small orchestra (two clarinets, two bassoons, and strings) and another for cello and piano. The orchestral version premiered in Vienna on 12 January 1918, at a “Historical Concert” organized by the War Ministry of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The cello version was first performed by Miklós Zsámboky (cello) and Ottó Herz (piano) at the Budapest Academy of Music on 4 November 1927.

Neither version was published during the composer’s lifetime. The orchestral version was later edited by Ferenc Farkas and István Máriássy in 1976 (distributed as hire material under order number K–1). This 2016 edition presents the cello version in print for the first time, edited and fingered by Miklós Perényi, based on Kodály’s autograph manuscript (Kodály Archive, Budapest, Ms. mus. 609/b) and a contemporary handwritten copy by Béla Csuka (National Széchényi Library, Ms. mus. 4155/a).
