English Summary:

Who knew that Kodály composed three discs' worth of chamber music for cello, either alone or in combination with violin or piano? This is marvelous stuff for the most part, whether in the clever and quite beautiful Bach transcriptions (three chorale preludes and one prelude and fugue from the Well-Tempered Clavier), or in the original pieces. Miklós Perényi, who studied this music with the composer, plays it with commanding assurance and an idiomatic stylistic awareness that can only come from a lifetime of experience. This is particularly true of the Sonata for Solo Cello, probably the greatest work of its kind, played here with a coloristic range and tonal warmth that's simply astonishing. Consider the finale, where Perényi creates a veritable orchestra of timbres and articulations that consistently engage the ear. So often this 30-minute-long piece feels its length--but not here, where the interpretation (even more energetic than Perényi's otherwise excellent 1976 Hungaroton recording) is as much a tour-de-force as the work itself.

Az 1910-es években Kodály és Bartók zenéje kiszorult a hazai hangversenytermekből; s bár Kodály tudósként és pedagógusként egyre nagyobb tekintélynek számított, zenét csak ritkán, s akkor is – megrendelő híján – csak „az asztalfióknak” szerzett.

Ezekben az években elsősorban vonós kamarazenei műveket írt, melyek a már korán kialakult Kodály-stílus reprezentálói, melyre a magyar népzene, ill. Debussy és Brahms zenéje hatott erősen.
 
A Szólószonátával Kodály egy rég elfeledett műfajt elevenít fel, hiszen Bach kétszáz évvel korábbi szvitjei óta nem született jelentős mű szólógordonkára.
