Tóth Gergely Japán – Magyar kapcsolattörténet 1869–1913 című kötete az első magyar nyelvű monográfia, amely a magyar–japán kapcsolatok korai időszakát dolgozza fel tudományos alapossággal és mégis olvasmányos stílusban.

A mű célja, hogy helyretegye a Japánnal kapcsolatos, sokszor misztikus és idealizált sztereotípiákat, valamint feltárja, miként sodródott bele a Monarchia magyar fele a 19–20. század fordulóján kibontakozó “japánimádat” eszmei áramlatába.

A szerző multidiszciplináris módszertannal, gazdag japán, magyar, angol és német forrásanyag alapján mutatja be a két ország közötti diplomáciai, kulturális és intellektuális kapcsolatok alakulását.

A kötet külön érdekessége, hogy az utolsó fejezetben megidézi a korabeli magyar kávéházi életet, ahol az 1890-es évektől kezdve egyre gyakrabban került szóba Japán mint „bájos tündérország”. A szerző a naplók, újságcikkek és személyes történetek mozaikjaiból rajzolja meg, hogyan látták a magyarok Japánt, és miként szemlélték a japán utazók Magyarországot a századfordulón.
