Overview

This compact biographical volume, János Lavotta (1764–1820) by Mária Domokos, introduces one of the most brilliant figures of Hungary’s Verbunkos era — the formative period of Hungarian national music. Published as part of the Hungarian Composers series by Magus Kiadó, the 32-page paperback offers an accessible and scholarly look into Lavotta’s life and contribution as both composer and virtuoso violinist.

Through historical notes, stylistic analysis, and references to his contemporaries such as János Bihari and Antal Csermák, the author provides valuable insight into how Lavotta helped shape Hungary’s musical identity at the dawn of its national awakening.

Interesting Facts

János Lavotta (1764–1820) was a distinguished violinist, composer, and central figure of the Verbunkos movement, a musical style that later influenced great composers such as Franz Liszt and Zoltán Kodály. Alongside János Bihari and Antal Csermák, Lavotta formed what Hungarian music historians often call the “virtuoso triad” — the three masters who shaped the expressive foundation of national romantic music.

Lavotta’s performances were legendary for their emotional depth. As contemporary critic János Erdélyi wrote, his playing “tore open the deepest and most painful passions of the soul; wherever his music wandered, it always descended into a sound world heavy with sorrow and national feeling.”

Interestingly, although Lavotta’s name remains widely known in Hungarian culture, many works traditionally attributed to him — such as Lavotta’s Love and the folk tune Cserebogár, sárga cserebogár — are not his authentic compositions. Nevertheless, his verified works, including verbunkospolonaises, and menuets for strings, display an exceptional synthesis of Western structure and Hungarian spirit.

Lavotta studied law in Pressburg (Bratislava) and Budapest but turned fully to music during a stay in Vienna in 1786. He served as music director of the Budapest Theatre (1792–1793), led orchestras in Kolozsvár (Cluj) and Miskolc, and later worked as a music dealer in Debrecen. His influence lived on through 19th-century Hungarian music, and in 1967, composer Ferenc Farkas honored him with the wind quintet Lavottiana.
