Interesting Facts

Genesis were an English rock band formed at Charterhouse School, in Godalming, Surrey, in 1967, with their longest-lasting and most commercially successful lineup consisting of keyboardist Tony Banks, bassist/guitarist Mike Rutherford, and drummer/singer Phil Collins. By the time Abacab was recorded, this trio had already established themselves as masters of their craft.

The group purchased a farmhouse in Surrey, England, which they converted into their private rehearsal and recording facility as recording for Abacab began in March 1981. The group dedicated 12 to 14 hours a day for about three months through the Spring of 1981 with engineer Hugh Padgham. This intensive creative process allowed the band to experiment freely and craft a sound that would define 1980s rock.

The album's title comes from the structure of the title track, where different musical sections were labeled A, B, and C. The band experimented with various arrangements (ABACAB, ACCAABBAAC, etc.) before settling on the final version. This creative approach exemplified Genesis's willingness to break from traditional song structures while maintaining accessibility.

The album reached number seven in the US and produced four singles: "Abacab," "No Reply At All," "Keep It Dark," and "Man On The Corner." Album sales in the US exceeded 2,000,000 copies. The album was released with four different embossed covers simultaneously, all depicting the same collage, making it a unique collector's item for fans.

Phil Collins was at a creative peak during this period, having just released his debut solo album "Face Value" earlier in 1981. His distinctive drumming style and emotive vocals became defining characteristics of the Genesis sound, while Tony Banks's synthesizer wizardry and Mike Rutherford's solid bass lines created the perfect foundation for the band's evolving musical direction.
