Interesting Facts
Antonín Dvořák was inspired to write the Slavonic Dances by his publisher Fritz Simrock, following the immense popularity of Johannes Brahms's Hungarian Dances. The first set, Op. 46, was originally composed for piano four-hands in 1878 but was so popular that Dvořák immediately orchestrated them. The orchestrations are renowned for their beauty of instrumentation, a quality particularly noted in this recording. The conductor, Mikhail Pletnev, is a celebrated Russian pianist and conductor known for his meticulous attention to detail and ability to bring out fresh, vibrant textures in familiar repertoire. The original 4D audio recording technology used by Deutsche Grammophon at the time ensured an exceptionally clear and dynamic sound, making this 1994 recording a sonic benchmark for the work.
