Overview

Experience the sweeping, heroic grandeur of one of the greatest Western scores ever composed with this Naxos release of Dimitri Tiomkin’s Red River. Originally composed for the 1948 Howard Hawks masterpiece starring John Wayne and Montgomery Clift, this score remains a cornerstone of Hollywood's Golden Age.

This album represents the first complete digital recording of the score. Meticulously restored by John Morgan, the music is performed with power and "muscular" intensity by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra and Choir under the direction of William Stromberg. From the thunderous action of the "Stampede" to the tender themes of the American frontier, this recording captures the full cinematic scale of Tiomkin’s vision.

Interesting Facts

  • The "Russian" Western: Despite being born in Ukraine and trained at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, Tiomkin became the definitive voice of the American West. When asked how a Russian could write Western music, he famously replied, "Did Johann Strauss, when he wrote 'The Blue Danube,' know how to swim?".
  • Original vs. Folk: Tiomkin’s secret was writing original melodies that sounded like authentic folk tunes. He also cleverly wove genuine folk songs like "Oh, Susannah" and "Deep in the Heart of Texas" into the musical fabric.
  • Choral Traditions: This score prominently features the Moscow Symphony Chorus; while their English lyrics are sometimes described as "woolly" or atmospheric, their presence adds a lush, Golden Age texture to the production.
  • Historical Accuracy: Restoration expert John Morgan reconstructed the score to be as faithful as possible to the 1948 original, preserving Tiomkin's complex shifting time signatures and cross-rhythms.
  • Cover Art: The evocative cover features a painting by W.R. Leigh titled Cowboys trying to check a cattle stampede.
