Overview
Six decades of blues — and Mayall never stopped moving.
This 2-disc set pulls from two distinct phases of his career. Disc 1 carries the jazz-leaning live recordings from the early 70s, when Mayall had already relocated to California and was building his first American band. Long tracks. Room to stretch. "Took the Car (Version 1)" runs over 12 minutes, "Won't Have To Worry" pushes past 11. These aren't pop edits — they're full performances.
Disc 2 shifts to 1981 with the Road Show album material. Tighter, more direct blues. Then it closes with three extended studio recordings from 1999, including "Possessive Emotions" at over 20 minutes.
What sets this copy apart: the front cover carries John Mayall's own signature in black marker. The man signed it himself.
The fold-out booklet includes a candid Mayall quote from 1993, period photos, and a detailed essay by Neil Slaven — giving solid context to both recording eras covered.
Interesting Facts
- Mayall relocated to Los Angeles in 1969 and by 1970 had formed his first American band, deliberately moving away from the Bluesbreakers format and into more experimental jazz-blues territory.
- The booklet quotes Mayall from a 1993 interview, taken on the eve of his sixtieth birthday, when he was still averaging 120 live dates a year.
- "Possessive Emotions" on Disc 2 runs over 20 minutes — one of the longest tracks in any official Mayall compilation release.
- Sound restoration was handled by Nick Watson at Town House, the same London facility used by major artists across rock and classical genres.
- The compilation was annotated by Neil Slaven, one of the foremost writers on British blues history.
