Overview
Forty tracks. Five years. Three of the most iconic blues guitarists Britain ever produced.
This double-disc set pulls together the essential recordings from John Mayall's most creatively explosive period. The Bluesbreakers lineup rotated through Eric Clapton, Peter Green, and Mick Taylor during these years — and each left a distinct fingerprint on the music. Mayall himself holds it all together: vocals, harmonica, piano, and guitar, steering the band through raw Chicago-rooted blues with real authority.
What makes this copy genuinely rare is the autographs. The inner booklet carries two signatures — one in blue ink, one in black — directly on the Bluesbreakers-era photo. Unsigned copies of this set are common. This one isn't.
The 24-page booklet adds depth with track-by-track recording notes and period photography. Mastered from the original tapes by Joseph Palmaccio at PolyGram Studios, the audio holds up well for a 1992 remaster.
Interesting Facts
- The three guitarist eras represented here — Clapton, Green, and Taylor — each brought a distinct style, with many collectors considering Peter Green the most inventive of the three.
- The very first track, "Crawling Up a Hill," was recorded on April 20, 1964 and originally released as a Decca single on May 8, 1964.
- Two tracks — "I'm Your Witchdoctor" and "Telephone Blues" — were originally produced by Jimmy Page, before his time with Led Zeppelin.
- The set includes over 2 hours of digitally remastered music, drawing from Decca singles, album tracks, and previously hard-to-find recordings.
- The autographs on this copy appear to include John Mayall's signature (blue ink) alongside a second musician's — likely a Bluesbreakers guitarist, based on the booklet photo context.
