Overview

Bare Wires is the point where John Mayall stopped trying to sound like anyone else. Recorded over four sessions at Decca Studios in West Hampstead in April 1968, it was the last album to carry the full John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers name — and in many ways, the most ambitious thing that lineup ever attempted.

Side one is one unbroken suite. Seven named movements, 22 minutes and 54 seconds, built around blues structures that reach deliberately into jazz territory. Its not a clean fusion — its something more restless than that. Side two settles into individual tracks, but the mood stays the same: stripped down, direct, a little uncomfortable.

The lineup here is rich. Dick Heckstall-Smith on tenor and soprano saxes. Jon Hiseman on drums. Henry Lowther adding cornet and violin. Mick Taylor on guitar, just before he would go on to other things. Mayall himself on vocal, harmonica, piano, harpsichord, organ, harmonium, and guitars. Produced by Mike Vernon and Mayall, engineered by Derek Varnals.

The album entered the UK chart on 20th July 1968 and climbed to number 3. In the US it peaked at 59. By August of that same year, the big-band configuration was already dissolving.

This physical CD pressing is an autographed copy — signed in blue marker on the front cover. A tangible artifact from the period when British blues was at its most restless and inventive.

Interesting Facts

  • Bare Wires was the last official release under the "John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers" banner. From this point on, Mayall's output carried his name alone.
  • The LP was issued on June 21, 1968 in the UK as Decca LK (Mono)/SKL (Stereo) 4945 — a simultaneous mono and stereo release. In the US it came out on London Records as PS 537, stereo only.
  • A promotional single was issued to support the album: Decca F 12792 coupled No Reply with She's Too Young, released June 7th. It failed to enter the UK Top 50.
  • Jon Hiseman joined the group under unusual circumstances. Mayall reportedly waited outside Hiseman's house for three hours after a gig, and offered him the job when Hiseman returned. Hiseman accepted — and found himself once again working alongside Dick Heckstall-Smith, a fellow alumnus of the Graham Bond Organisation.
  • Tony Reeves, recruited on bass after Keith Tillman's brief tenure, came from the New Jazz Orchestra — a deliberate choice that signalled Mayall's jazz ambitions for this project.
  • Mick Taylor played guitar on this album before joining the Rolling Stones in 1969.
  • The booklet includes a handwritten-style note from John Mayall dated May 1968: "This is my story so let this music be my true voice."
  • The AAD encoding means the original session tapes were analog, mixed and mastered digitally for CD — a bridge pressing that preserves the warmth of the original 1968 recording.

A felállás gazdag.

  • Mick Taylor gitározott ezen a lemezen, mielőtt 1969-ben csatlakozott a Rolling Stones-hoz.
