Overview

Fifteen tracks. Seventy minutes. All of it written, produced, and delivered by a man who'd been doing this for over four decades.

Road Dogs was recorded between January 10 and February 10, 2005, in Calabasas, California — sessions and mixing wrapped inside a single month. That pace shows. The album has a live-room directness to it, loose in the right places, locked in where it counts.

The title track opens things up with road-life blues — Mayall at the electric piano, Whittington on slide and rhythm, the groove rolling easy. "Short Wave Radio" shifts to upright bass and piano, a personal track about discovering the blues as a teenager through a shortwave set. Personal and specific. Those are the songs that land.

Two songs in, Mayall has already name-checked Blind Lemon Jefferson, Muddy Waters, and Little Walter. That's not nostalgia. That's someone showing where he came from and why it still matters.

The band is lean here — Whittington handles a wide range of guitar tones across the 15 tracks, from baritone to acoustic to lead, and Hank Van Sickle switches between upright and electric bass depending on what the song needs. Violin appears on two tracks, pulling the record briefly toward something rawer and more open.

This copy carries an autograph on the front cover — a notable detail for any collector.

• Mayall revived the Bluesbreakers name in 1984 — two decades after his 1960s heyday — and that decision sparked a renewed creative drive that carried through into the 2005 recording sessions for Road Dogs.

• Road Dogs covers an A-to-Z of blues styles: delta blues, harmonica blues, talking blues, boogie woogie, swamp blues, and blues-based rock — all on one album.

• The BBC aired a documentary titled The Godfather of British Blues around the time of this album's release, documenting Mayall's life and career.

• In 2005, Mayall was awarded an OBE on the Queen's Honours list.
