Overview

Tough came out in 2009 — Mayall was 75. The title fits. Eleven tracks, no filler, no nostalgia trip. Just blues with weight behind it.

The album opens dark. "Nothing to Do with Love" sets an urban, bleak tone with screaming harmonica and a searing guitar solo. It doesn't ease you in. Track two, "Just What You're Looking For," keeps the pressure on — a funk-edged meditation featuring dual Hammond organ work from Tom Canning and Mayall himself.

Track three is worth noting. "Playing with a Losing Hand" was written by Walter Trout — a former Bluesbreaker — about temptation and the futility of chasing the wrong things. Mayall delivers it like someone who knows exactly what the song is about.

Mid-album, "How Far Down" pulls back to a lone acoustic guitar and Mayall's voice. It's the emotional center of the record. Quiet and heavy at the same time.

"That Good Old Rockin' Blues" — written by Mayall — is an unambiguous rocker and a direct statement about contemporary music trends. No apologies offered.

Áttekintés

Tough 2009-ben jelent meg — Mayall ekkor 75 éves volt. A cím találó. Tizenegy szám, semmi töltőanyag, semmi nosztalgiázás. Csak súlyos blues.

A lemez sötéten nyit. A "Nothing to Do with Love" sivár, városi hangulatot teremt, sikoltó szájharmonikával és éles gitárszólóval. Nem vezet be finoman. A második szám, a "Just What You're Looking For" sem enged — funky, Hammond orgonán alapuló meditáció, amelyen Canning és Mayall együtt játszik.

A harmadik szám külön figyelmet érdemel. A "Playing with a Losing Hand"-et Walter Trout írta — egykori Bluesbreaker-tag —, a kísértésről és a helytelen dolgok hajszolásának hiábavalóságáról. Mayall úgy adja elő, mint aki pontosan tudja, miről szól.

Az album közepén a "How Far Down" egyetlen akusztikus gitárra és Mayall hangjára szűkíti a képet. Ez a lemez érzelmi súlypontja. Csendes és nehéz egyszerre.

A "That Good Old Rockin' Blues" — Mayall saját szerzeménye — nyílt állásfoglalás a kortárs zenei trendekkel szemben. Bocsánatkérés nélkül.

Ez a példány aláírást hordoz a borítón.

Interesting Facts / Érdekességek

  • Tough was Mayall's first studio album in four years, following Road Dogs (2005).
  • "Playing with a Losing Hand" was contributed by Walter Trout, who himself passed through the Bluesbreakers ranks in the late 1980s before building a substantial solo blues career.
  • The liner booklet includes detailed per-track commentary — unusually thorough for a blues release of this era, giving buyers real insight into each song's themes and musical choices.
  • Greg Rzab (bass) and Jay Davenport (drums) — the rhythm section on this album — went on to become Mayall's longest-serving bandmates, staying with him until the end of his touring career.
  • John Mayall passed away on July 22, 2024, at age 90 in his California home, making all signed copies from this period permanent collector pieces.
