Overview

Empty Rooms is a 1969 album that landed at a turning point. Right after disbanding the classic electric Bluesbreakers lineup, Mayall stripped things back — no drums, acoustic textures, Moog, flutes. The result is something quieter and more personal than anything he'd made before.

The back cover carries Mayall's own words, written at the time: the record, he said, consists of personal observations and feelings — all part of his search for happiness. That's not marketing. That's a man working something out through music.

Mayall plays nearly everything himself — guitars, bass, keyboards, Moog, harmonica. Johnny Almond's saxophones and flutes add atmosphere without weight. Jon Mark's fingerstyle guitar work runs through several tracks with a folk-acoustic clarity that sets this apart from standard British blues of the era.

Tracks like "Counting the Days" (5:31) and "Waiting for the Right Time" (5:33) take their time. No rush. "To a Princess" and "Lying in My Bed" close the album with the same reflective tone it opened with.

This is a CD reissue of a genuine 1969 classic — and this copy carries an autograph on the front cover.

Jon Mark fingerstyle gitárjátéka folk-akusztikus tisztasággal fut végig a számokon.

A "Counting the Days" (5:31) és a "Waiting for the Right Time" (5:33) ráér. Nincs sietség. A "To a Princess" és a "Lying in My Bed" ugyanolyan meditatív hangvétellel zárja a lemezt, ahogy nyílt.

  • Empty Rooms marked a sharp stylistic break — Mayall disbanded the Bluesbreakers and recorded without a drummer, pushing into acoustic and jazz-influenced territory that surprised many fans at the time.
  • Engineer Eddie Kramer had previously worked with Jimi Hendrix — his presence in the credits places this album in a very specific moment in late-1960s recording history.
  • Larry Taylor, credited as guest bassist, was a member of Canned Heat at the time — his appearance here was borrowed courtesy of Liberty Records.
  • Jon Mark (guitars) went on to form the jazz-folk group Mark-Almond with Johnny Almond, directly out of these sessions.
  • The album was dedicated by Mayall to "Nancy and the start of something good" — a personal inscription that survived into the CD reissue liner notes.
  • John Mayall passed away on July 22, 2024, aged 90, making all signed copies from his catalog permanent collector items.
