Magyar Bár az "etűd" elnevezés és maga a műfaj is elsősorban a 19. századra jellemző, etűdfunkciójú darabok (az ujjak edzésére alkalmas, többnyire tánceredetű tételek) már a barokk korban is léteztek. Czidra László, a nemzetközi hírű, kiváló magyar furulyajátékos és pedagógus ilyen darabokat válogatott, s ha szükségesnek érezte, a pedagógiai célnak megfelelően többékevésbé át is alakított e kötet számára. A barokk korban a furulyaművek legnagyobb része altfurulyára íródott, hiszen ez volt akkoriban az egyik "sztár" szólóhangszer. A szopránfurulya irodalma ennél jóval szerényebb – ma viszont az iskolai oktatásban igen fontos szerepet játszik ez a hangszer.
