Ez a kötet ebben a formában különleges. Különleges azért, amennyire tudjuk nem fordult még elő, vagy ha igen, nagyon ritka a magyar irodalom történetében, hogy két, egymástól térben és időben távoli ember ugyanarra gondolatra jutott volna, nevezetesen: le kell fordítani angol nyelvre a Toldit. A kétnyelvű kötet az eredeti Arany-szöveg mindkét angol fordítását tartalmazza. Annak reményében bocsátjuk útjára a kötetet, hogy ha nem is tolmácsolható tökéletesen a költemény, mégis visszaadja a történetet, a hangulatot és a sokszor felfűtött érzelmeket is.

In this form this volume is special. It is special because as to my opinion it did not occur or did occur only in a few cases in the history of Hungarian literature that two persons living far from each other both in space and time concluded the same: the Toldi has to be translated into English. This bilingual volume contains the original text of Arany and parallel both translations. We publish this volume in hope that though it has been rather troublesome to interpret the poem, translations will reflect the story, atmosphere and the sometimes tense overtones.

About the Author:

János Arany was a Hungarian journalist, writer, poet, and translator. He is often said to be the "Shakespeare of ballads" – he wrote more than 102 ballads been translated into over 50 languages, as well as the Toldi trilogy, to mention his most famous works.
