The Art of the Pas de Deux features a host of great dancers, several of whom have a legendary connection to their roles. There is Alonso's Giselle, by consensus the benchmark for any ballerina attempting the role. Vasiliev as Spartacus embodies the nobility of his character, and even in her maturity Ulanova manages to captivate as Juliet. Though Sir Frederick Ashton created the role of Cinderella for Moira Shearer, it was Margot Fonteyn who eventually claimed the role, with Michael Somes as her Cavalier in this and so many other ballets. The great Plisetskaya charms as The Queen-Maiden in The Little Humpbacked Horse and dazzles as Carmen, while Bruhn and Nureyev show why they dominated the ranks of male dancers.
