Emil Gilels • Live in Moscow. Vol. 3
The selections featured on this DVD are by composers whose works have long been associated with Emil Gilels. His Beethoven, celebrated for its scrupulous musicality and stylistic mastery, resulted in no less than three recordings of the complete concerto cycle as well as multiple recordings of several of the sonatas. The pianist was, in fact, in the final stages of recording a complete Beethoven sonata cycle when he died in 1985 at the age of 69.
Prokofiev was also central to Gilels' repertoire. He was the dedicatee of the composer's eighth piano sonata, playing its world premiere in 1944. Like the Beethoven Sonata No.12, the Prokofiev is atypical structurally, lasting just about eight minutes in its single movement. But Prokofiev was not a miniaturist by nature and in this sonata there is plenty of Sturm und Drang framing the more meditative sections of the work. Shorter works by Prokofiev demonstrate Gilels' uncanny use of color.
For this recital, Gilels chose a closing Rachmaninoff group featuring some of the composer's most popular works, including the C-sharp minor and G minor preludes, the seductive Vocalise, and Daisies. Most probably it was only Rachmaninoff himself who was able to perform this music with the requisite authority and technical panache that Gilels brings to these keyboard favorites.
