Overview
The 2007 Crossroads Guitar Festival happened in one place, on one day — Toyota Park in Chicago, July 28 — and put more great guitar players on a single stage than almost any concert ever filmed. This 2-DVD set captures the whole thing across more than four hours, the second of Eric Clapton's benefit festivals for the Crossroads Centre in Antigua.
The lineup is the draw. Jeff Beck, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, John McLaughlin, Robert Cray, Sonny Landreth, Albert Lee, Vince Gill, Willie Nelson, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, John Mayer, Steve Winwood, Hubert Sumlin, Johnny Winter, Jimmie Vaughan — players who rarely share a bill, trading solos and backing each other through blues, rock, country, and Tejano.
Clapton himself appears throughout, including a reunion with Steve Winwood on Blind Faith material like "Presence of the Lord" and "Can't Find My Way Home," plus the title track "Crossroads" together. The closer, "Sweet Home Chicago," pulls Buddy Guy, B.B. King's circle, and half the festival onto one stage. Comedian Bill Murray handles the introduction.
A genuine document of modern blues and rock guitar, filmed and mixed properly. Royalties from the set benefit the Crossroads Centre, Antigua.
Interesting Facts
- The festival was held to raise funds for the Crossroads Centre in Antigua, the addiction-treatment facility Eric Clapton founded in 1998.
- This was the second Crossroads Guitar Festival; the first took place in Dallas in 2004, and the event later returned in 2010, 2013, 2019 and beyond.
- The set marks a reunion of Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood, who first played together in Blind Faith in 1969, performing several of that band's songs.
- B.B. King, Hubert Sumlin, Johnny Winter and Willie Nelson — several of the legends featured here — have since passed away, making the footage a lasting record of their playing.
- Actor and comedian Bill Murray, not a musician, opens the concert with the introduction.
- The release was produced in part by Peter Jackson, the film director, alongside Clapton and others.
