Overview
Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival is the closest thing the guitar world has to a summit meeting, and the 2010 edition — held at Chicago's Toyota Park on 26 June — is one of the strongest. This two-disc set runs over four and a half hours, gathering blues, rock and roots players across generations into one stage.
The lineup is enormous. Clapton himself trades licks with Jeff Beck, Steve Winwood, Robert Cray, Jimmie Vaughan and Hubert Sumlin; B.B. King closes things out with "The Thrill Is Gone"; Buddy Guy, ZZ Top, Sheryl Crow, Vince Gill, John Mayer, Gary Clark Jr., Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi, Robert Randolph, Keb' Mo' and many more all take turns. Forty performances in all, captured with festival-scale production in 5.1 and dts, plus behind-the-scenes footage and interviews.
For blues and guitar fans this is a cornerstone live document — a single afternoon's worth of once-in-a-lifetime collaborations, and a benefit at heart: royalties from the DVD support the Crossroads Centre in Antigua, the addiction-treatment charity Clapton founded.
Interesting Facts
- The festival raises money for Crossroads Centre in Antigua, the addiction-recovery facility Eric Clapton established; DVD royalties go to the charity.
- B.B. King closes the set with an all-star "The Thrill Is Gone," joined by the full ensemble.
- Jeff Beck performs his celebrated instrumental reading of Puccini's "Nessun Dorma."
- The 2010 event was held at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, near Chicago, on a single June day.
- The collaborations are the draw: pairings like Clapton with Steve Winwood ("Voodoo Chile," "Had to Cry Today") rarely happen anywhere else.
- Directed by Martyn Atkins, with Clapton among the producers.
