Forget the standard nostalgia documentary. Privát Rocktörténet works on a beautifully simple idea: sit each band member down separately, let them remember, then let another member's memory continue or correct the first. No interruptions, no know-it-all narrator pushing the story forward. Just musicians talking.

And the subject here is everything. Illés. Hungary's first true rock legend to sing in their own language — at a time when that was a quiet act of cultural defiance. The lineup on the back cover photograph speaks for itself: Illés Lajos at the keys, Szörényi Levente, Bródy János, Szörényi Szabolcs, Pásztory "Zorro" Tamás. They wrote about real youth problems, in Magyar, with melodies that pulled from folk tradition but moved like beat music.

This signed copy makes it personal. The autographs on the cover are originals — the kind you can no longer collect, because two of the lineup are already gone. Illés Lajos passed in 2007. Pásztory Tamás in 2018.

A Privát Rocktörténet egy gyönyörűen egyszerű ötletre épül: ültesd le külön-külön a zenekar tagjait, hagyd, hogy emlékezzenek, majd hagyd, hogy egy másik tag emléke folytassa vagy kiegészítse az elsőt. Semmi közbeszólás, semmi mindentudó narrátor, aki tolja előre a történetet. Csak zenészek beszélnek.

A téma pedig minden. Az Illés. Magyarország első igazi rocklegendája, amely a saját nyelvén énekelt — abban a korban, amikor ez egy csendes kulturális ellenállást jelentett. A hátsó borítón látható felállás magáért beszél: Illés Lajos a billentyűknél, Szörényi Levente, Bródy János, Szörényi Szabolcs, Pásztory „Zorro" Tamás. A fiatalok valódi problémáiról írtak, magyarul, olyan dallamokkal, amelyek a népzenei hagyományból merítettek, de a beat lendületével mozogtak.

Interesting Facts

Az Illés együttes was founded in Budapest in 1957 by Illés Lajos and went on to become one of the "big three" of the Hungarian beat era, alongside Omega and Metro. Their 1969 album Ezek a fiatalok and the 1971 Human Rights are considered foundational works of Hungarian rock. The band famously stood up against state pressure to perform in Western languages, insisting on singing exclusively in Hungarian — a decision that defined the entire trajectory of magyar rock music. Bródy János became one of Hungary's most celebrated lyricists, and Szörényi Levente later co-composed the legendary rock opera István, a király (Stephen, the King) in 1983 with Bródy. The band was banned from television and radio multiple times during the socialist era for their cultural independence. The press critique excerpt on the back cover comes from Trencsényi Zoltán's 2009 review of the original broadcast, praising the show's method of letting musicians' memories build on each other naturally.

Az Illés együttest 1957-ben alapította Illés Lajos Budapesten, és a magyar beat-korszak „nagy hármasának" egyik tagjává vált, az Omega és a Metro mellett. Az 1969-es Ezek a fiatalok és az 1971-es Human Rights albumok a magyar rock alapvető műveinek számítanak. A zenekar híres módon szembeszállt az állami nyomással, amely arra próbálta rávenni őket, hogy nyugati nyelveken énekeljenek — ragaszkodtak ahhoz, hogy kizárólag magyarul énekeljenek, és ez a döntés meghatározta a magyar rockzene egész pályaívét. Bródy János Magyarország egyik legünnepeltebb dalszövegírója lett, Szörényi Levente pedig később, 1983-ban Bródyval közösen szerezte a legendás István, a király című rockoperát. A zenekart a szocialista korszakban többször is eltiltották a televíziótól és a rádiótól kulturális függetlenségük miatt.
