The Igor Moiseyev State Academic Ensemble of Popular Dance, known in Russia as the GAANT, and alternatively known as the Moiseyev Dance Company or simply the Igor Moiseyev Ballet, is a dance troupe focusing on character dance, based in Moscow, Russia. The troupe combines traditional folk dance and classical ballet techniques to create their style of character dance. It was established in 1937 by Igor Moiseyev and is one of the most influential and acclaimed dance troupes of both Soviet and modern Russia.
IGOR MOISEYEV AND HIS WORLD OF DANCE (1982 Documentary, Russia)
This, the third in VAI's DVD series featuring Russia's brilliant Moiseyev Dance Company, shows the troupe at work under the guidance of its founder and director, Igor Moiseyev. Moiseyev, who died in 2007
at the age of 101, turned national dance into theatrical extravaganza with his colorful, virtuosic creations, many of which are included in this documentary. In the interview portions of the program,
Moiseyev speaks of the transcendent aspects of folkloric dance which provided an escape from oppressive forces, borne out by the joyous energy so prevalent in his dances.
Among the extra DVD features on this release is the riotous, overtly political and exhilarating "Viva Cuba!" in which the company forgoes its customary style for a decidedly Latin beat, complete with samba lines, conga drummers and a cigar-chomping, machine-gun-toting corps of Castro look-a-likes!
