Overview
The Unforgettable Fire arrived in 1984 as U2's most deliberately atmospheric record to date — a sharp pivot from the arena anthems of War toward something moodier, more cinematic, and more curious about texture. Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois produced it together, and their fingerprints are all over the wide, reverb-soaked spaces that made songs like "Bad" and "Pride (In the Name of Love)" feel enormous even at low volume.
This 2009 Deluxe Edition pairs the remastered album with a 36-page hardback book and a full bonus disc of B-sides and previously unreleased material — seventeen tracks including live recordings, remixes, and studio oddities that never made the original cut. It is the definitive physical edition of one of U2's most loved records, and it arrives still sealed in its original factory wrapping.
For anyone who grew up with this album, the remastered audio is noticeably cleaner and more open than older pressings, bringing out the atmospheric depth that Eno and Lanois worked so carefully to build.
Interesting Facts
- Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois produced The Unforgettable Fire — their first major rock production together. The partnership would continue on The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby, two of rock's most celebrated records.
- "Pride (In the Name of Love)" was written as a tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. and reached #3 in the UK singles chart. The song remains one of U2's most-played live tracks.
- "Bad" was never released as a single from this album yet became one of U2's most iconic live moments — their extended performance at Live Aid in 1985 is widely credited with propelling them to global superstardom.
- The album title and artwork were inspired by a 1984 exhibition of Japanese-American internment camp paintings — The Unforgettable Fire was the title given to artworks made by survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
- The bonus disc includes "11 O'Clock Tick Tock", a 1980 single that predates the album by four years and was one of U2's earliest radio hits.
- This 2009 Deluxe Edition was issued under the Universal-Island Records Limited imprint with licensed distribution through Interscope in the US — marking the 25th anniversary of the original release.
