Overview

Dr. Richard Kimble (Harrison Ford) is convicted of murdering his wife. He didn't do it. After a dramatic train crash, he escapes — and immediately finds himself hunted by the relentless U.S. Marshal Samuel Gerard (Tommy Lee Jones). The Fugitive is that rare action thriller where the cat-and-mouse tension is so well-constructed that you're rooting for both men simultaneously: Kimble to prove his innocence, Gerard to catch his man. Andrew Davis, working with a screenplay that never stops moving, produced one of the tightest studio thrillers of the decade.

The film made Tommy Lee Jones an Academy Award winner — his supporting performance as Gerard is a masterclass in controlled aggression that doesn't miss a beat. This German-pressed Warner Bros. PAL edition is the standard European release, with the English-language audio intact alongside German and French tracks. German FSK rating indicates a legitimate German pressing.

Interesting Facts

  • Tommy Lee Jones won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Marshal Samuel Gerard — his acceptance speech, brief and characteristically laconic, became somewhat famous.
  • The film is based on the 1960s American television series The Fugitive, starring David Janssen. Andrew Davis updated the premise without diluting its essentials.
  • Harrison Ford was in the middle of his most commercially dominant period when this was made; the film grossed over $368 million worldwide.
  • The train/bus crash sequence — practical stunts, not CGI — remains one of the most convincingly executed action set pieces of the era.
  • Director Andrew Davis went on to direct Under Siege and A Perfect Murder; The Fugitive is widely considered the peak of his output.
  • The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture, with Tommy Lee Jones' win as the sole recipient.
