Overview
Gardens In My Mind is Joanna Wallfisch's most ambitious record — a singer-songwriter's set of original material framed by a string quartet and a jazz pianist, sitting somewhere between vocal jazz, chamber music, and art song. Wallfisch sings and plays piano and ukulele; Dan Tepfer adds piano and melodica; the Sacconi Quartet supplies the strings.
The writing leans intimate and atmospheric. Tracks like "Moons of Jupiter," "Satellite," and the title song trade in imagery and space, while a cover of Tim Buckley's "Song to the Siren" sits naturally among the originals. The arrangements give the quartet real room — this isn't strings as decoration but as a full voice in the music.
Recorded in Wales and mixed in New York, released on the respected jazz label Sunnyside in 2016. The disc is enhanced, too: drop it into a computer for a digital booklet and the "Gardens In My Mind" music video.
