Overview
In the Garden is a live set from guitarist Juhász Gábor's quartet, caught in one night at Budapest's Fonó on International Jazz Day, 2017. Seven originals, each named for a corner of a garden — the swing, the doghouse, the walnut tree, the bench, the fireplace — and the music follows that domestic-pastoral logic rather than any jam-session formula.
The instrumentation is the draw. Guitar over Hammond organ, double bass and drums is a classic soul-jazz front, but Juhász and organist Gátos Iván play it cool and unhurried, leaving room for the long form — "Diófa (Walnut Tree)" runs nearly twelve minutes and earns every second. Kovács Zoltán on double bass keeps the floor warm; Jeszenszky György's brushwork does as much shaping as the soloists.
Recorded by Kopcsik Márton at Bresaola Studios, the live capture is intimate without sounding like a bootleg — you hear the room. For listeners who like their jazz melodic, organ-led and built for the long phrase, this is a quietly excellent Hungarian date.
