Overview
Jonas Kaufmann sets the world's greatest operatic tenor voice loose on the popular hits of Berlin's golden age, and the result is the kind of crossover record that wins over opera devotees and casual listeners alike. Du bist die Welt für mich — "You Are the World to Me" — gathers the glamorous tunes that the tenor stars of the 1920s and early sound-film years made famous, from Richard Tauber's Weimar-era favorites to the songs of the new "talkie" age when film tenors like Joseph Schmidt were the superstars of their day.
Kaufmann hand-picked the program himself, and it shows. Lehár, Kálmán, Stolz, Korngold and Abraham sit side by side, swinging between aching romance and sheer charm. The Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin under Jochen Rieder gives these melodies a lush, period-true sweep, and soprano Julia Kleiter joins for three duets.
This is the Limited Edition, which pairs the 16-track CD with a bonus DVD: three music videos filmed live in Berlin plus a behind-the-scenes "Making Of," in German and English. A complete package for collectors of Kaufmann or of the great Berlin songbook — and it arrives brand new and still in its factory shrink-wrap.
Interesting Facts
- Jonas Kaufmann has been hailed as "the world's greatest tenor" by The Daily Telegraph, "the German marvel" by The Times, and a "Wundertenor" by Le Monde.
- The album's title track, "Du bist die Welt für mich," comes from the 1934 film Der singende Traum and was originally a signature of tenor Richard Tauber.
- The repertoire bridges operetta and early German sound cinema — a moment when opera-trained tenors became matinee idols on the new "talkie" screen.
- Erich Wolfgang Korngold's "Glück, das mir verblieb" from Die tote Stadt closes the program, linking the Berlin song tradition to Korngold's later Hollywood film-score legacy.
- The recording was made with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, one of Germany's oldest broadcasting orchestras, founded in 1923.
