Overview

This is P. Mobil's Honfoglalás — "The Conquest" — in its 1995 symphonic recording, where one of Hungarian hard rock's most ambitious works meets the full Állami Hangversenyzenekar under conductor Wolf Péter. It's the band's lifelong epic, finally given an orchestra.

The piece tells the founding myth of the Hungarian people across five movements: the ancient homeland, the wanderings, the battles, the blood oath, the new land. Schuster Lóránt first dreamed up the idea in 1976, driving home from a tour under a starlit sky; the suite was first performed in 1978 and became one of the landmark statements of Hungarian rock. This re-recording, made for the 1100th-anniversary commemoration of the conquest, expands it with strings, choir, and folk voices — the rock band's drive intact, but with symphonic weight behind it.

Földes László "Hobo" wrote the lyrics, drawing on the Hungarian Book of Legends, with the band's signature line-up of the era: Tunyogi Péter on vocals, Zeffer András on keys, Kékesi "Bajnok" László on bass, Sárvári "Schiller" Vilmos on guitar, Németh Gábor on drums, and Schuster Lóránt as bandleader and narrator. Guest voices include folk singer Sebestyén Márta and the men's choir of the Honvéd Ensemble; Fehér László adds tárogató.

The packaging carries the full Hungarian texts and a note on the shamanic sun-drum imagery that runs through the artwork. A striking crossover record for collectors of Hungarian rock and rock-symphonic works alike. Sung in Hungarian.

Interesting Facts

  • The Honfoglalás suite predates the famous rock opera István, a király by several years and is considered one of the major achievements of Hungarian rock.
  • Schuster Lóránt traces the idea to a single starlit night in the summer of 1976, returning home from a tour.
  • The lyrics are by Földes László "Hobo," built on the Hungarian Book of Legends (Mondák könyve).
  • This symphonic version was prepared for the millecentenárium — the 1996 commemoration of 1,100 years since the Magyar conquest.
  • Folk singer Sebestyén Márta, later internationally known for her work on the English Patient soundtrack, guests on the movement "Hazám, hazám," a Moldavian Csángó folk song.
  • The cover art reproduces a painted shaman drum of possibly Siberian origin, its world-tree divisions and revolving sun-symbols described in the booklet from Mihály Hoppál's book on shamans.
