Overview

In the Hall of the Mambo King gathers vintage recordings by Anselmo Sacasas, the Cuban pianist and bandleader who helped shape the golden age of mambo. Part of Our World's Latin Heritage Masters series, it collects sixteen sides recorded between 1943 and 1948, carefully restored from the original masters.

Sacasas was a pioneering figure — a founding pianist of the Casino de la Playa orchestra before leading his own band in the United States. His swinging, sophisticated arrangements bridged Cuban dance music and the big-band sound, and they helped ignite the mambo craze that swept America in the 1940s and '50s.

These tracks — from "B-Flat Mambo" and "Poco Loco" to "Rumba Negra" and "Mi Vacilón" — brim with bright brass, rippling piano and irresistible rhythm. Our World's restoration brings warmth and clarity to performances that are now eight decades old.

For collectors of vintage Latin music, mambo and classic Cuban jazz, this is a lovingly assembled historical document — a window into the era when the mambo king reigned.
