Overview

Rachmaninov wrote some eighty-three songs, and they sit slightly in the shadow of the piano concertos and symphonies — which is a shame, because the best of them are among the finest in the Russian song repertoire. This recital gathers 26 of them, and it has the ideal advocate in Dmitri Hvorostovsky, whose dark, even baritone and long breath were made for this music.

The program ranges across Rachmaninov's whole career, from early songs of 1890 and 1893 through the great Op. 14 and Op. 21 sets to the Op. 26 group. You get the famous ones — "Spring Waters," with its surging piano, and "How nice this place is" (Zdes' khorosho), one of the most beloved songs he ever wrote — alongside quieter, more inward settings like "In the silence of the mysterious night."

Ivari Ilja is no mere accompanist; in these songs the piano is half the drama, and he gives it full weight. Recorded by Ondine with their usual clarity and warmth, and supplied with full texts and English translations, this is a distinguished single-disc survey of Rachmaninov the song composer, sung by one of the great baritones of the age.

Interesting Facts

  • "How nice this place is" (Zdes' khorosho), Op. 21/7, is among his most frequently performed and recorded songs worldwide.
  • Dmitri Hvorostovsky (1962–2017) was one of the most acclaimed operatic baritones of his generation, especially renowned in Russian and Verdi repertoire.
