Overview

The "old Russian romance" is a genre all its own — sentimental, melancholy parlour songs from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, about love, longing, troikas in the snow and stars in the night sky. They've been sung by everyone from gypsy singers to opera stars, and here they get the most luxurious treatment imaginable from Dmitri Hvorostovsky.

The title song, "I Met You, My Love" (Ya vstretil vas), is one of the most cherished of all Russian romances, and Hvorostovsky sings it — and the eighteen that follow — with a warmth and directness that never strains for effect. "Shine, Shine, My Star," "The Coachman's Song," "The Lonely Coach Bell Rings": these are melodies that live deep in Russian memory, delivered by a voice of rare beauty.

Constantine Orbelian and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, with the folk ensemble Style of Five, give Evgeny Stetsyuk's arrangements a velvet glow, balancing orchestral richness with the intimacy the songs need. Recorded in DSD by Delos. For lovers of Russian song, or for anyone who wants to hear a great baritone at his most tender, this is an irresistible disc.
