Overview
Two essential Miles Davis records on one remastered set. Disc one is Sketches of Spain, his 1960 collaboration with arranger Gil Evans — the orchestral, Spanish-tinged session that turned Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez" into a sixteen-minute jazz meditation and remains one of the most beautiful things either man ever put to tape.
The pairing is smart. Disc two, Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants, comes from the mid-1950s Prestige sessions and works as a perfect counterweight — small-group, hard-swinging, and built around a famous studio summit with Thelonious Monk, Milt Jackson, Percy Heath and Kenny Clarke. The "'Round Midnight" date adds John Coltrane, Red Garland and Philly Joe Jones.
So you get both sides of Davis at once: the painterly orchestral side with Evans, and the lean combo side with the leading bop players of the day. The remastering keeps the original mixes intact while cleaning up the sound for current systems.
For anyone building a jazz collection, this is a generous, affordable way to own two cornerstone recordings together.
Interesting Facts
- Sketches of Spain was recorded at Columbia 30th Street Studio in November 1959 and March 1960, arranged and conducted by Gil Evans.
- The opening "Concierto de Aranjuez" adapts the slow movement of Joaquín Rodrigo's guitar concerto, reimagined for Davis's flugelhorn and a large ensemble.
- Disc one's personnel reads like an orchestra: trumpets, trombones, French horns, tuba, flutes, oboe, bassoon, harp and percussion, with Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums.
- Disc two captures the legendary 1954 Christmas Eve session that paired Davis with Thelonious Monk at Rudy Van Gelder's studio.
- The "'Round Midnight" track features an early recorded meeting of Davis and John Coltrane, two of jazz's most influential figures.
- This Not Now Music edition was released in 2011, compiling both albums from their original Columbia and Prestige sources.
